IBSA TAA Practitioners' Network – project update September

ICT02 Cover ImageIBSA is trialling a wiki site as a mechanism for VET practitioners to share and build knowledge of innovative practice in delivery and assessment. TAA04 has been selected as the focus of the trial and the site is now open for general participation. The wiki is very much a work in progress and will be shaped by the needs, interests and contributions of its users.

Over the last month core group members of the IBSA TAA Practitioners’ Network have been sharing information about their delivery and assessment practice and adding content to the IBSA wiki site. The wiki is very much a work in progress and will be shaped by the needs, interests and contributions of its users. So it’s time for us to get you involved.

We invite you to visit the wiki at: www.openobject.org/wikitp

The ‘Getting Started’ page provides an orientation to the site and will give you a feel for its purpose and aims. The ‘Logging in’ page gives information on setting up your own user page and preferences (such as email alerts when pages are changed). The ‘Editing tips’ page contains instructions for editing content, adding new pages, creating links and uploading files.

So much to do, so little time? The Network has agreed to set a regular ‘Hot Topic’ to focus discussion and help users decide where to start. The current Hot Topic is ‘Clustering’. See what others have to say about clustering units in the TAA Cert IV and add your comments and questions.

We hope to see you on the wiki soon.

Linking literacy with key industry issues

In collaboration with other Industry Skills Councils through the ISC Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) Network IBSA is developing an information pack that will help to build understanding of the way that literacy issues underpin many important industry concerns. The real deal highlights how literacy is related to issues around skill shortages, workplace safety, recruitment, effective training, productivity and others. The pack aims to help ISCs talk with industry about training and literacy skills development. Information from the pack will be presented at the national WELL conference in Sydney (link to WELL on the Way conference information).

IBSA Stakeholders: Activities and Events

ACPET conference: IBSA prize winner

It was good to see so many of IBSA stakeholders at the recent 2008 ACPET conference in Hobart at the end of August. As a Silver Sponsor, the IBSA exhibition stand was a hub of activity and delegates were able to purchase publications and talk to Alex, Caryn and Matthew, as well as to General Manager, Cherry Cole, whose presentation Dare to be different: Innovations in private education was very well received, as was fello Industry Skills Council presentation by Service Skills Australia’s Jeanette Allen’s Industry Skills Councils: Our role in increasing productivity and participation in Australia’s workforce.

After a very successful conference, we drew our Exhibition Booth prize for everyone who had placed their business card in the draw to win an iPod Touch. The Winner was Jenine Bailey from MADEC in Mackay Queensland.

From all at IBSA, ‘Congratulations’ to Jenine and we hope you enjoy your new iPod.

IBSA and the Television Technical Operators College (TTOC)

IBSA General Manager Cherry Cole, along with key industry and government stakeholders, is a member of the Television Technical Operators College (TTOC) Industry Advisory Committee which met in early September to discuss achievements to date and future strategies for enhancing industry engagement.

TTOC represents a successful skills and employment pathways model in an industry which, by its very nature, has difficulty accommodating traditional notions of training and employment. It offers a hands-on, applied model of training and employment that is underpinned by contemporary qualifications, many of which come from IBSA’s Training Packages.

The TTOC's inherent value is that it works for both enterprises and individuals at several levels. By bridging the competency gap between theory and application for new entrants, it builds industry confidence in using and growing new talent and by targeting the real-time continuing professional development needs of existing workers. The TTOC delivers on specialised skills retention, currency, productivity and flexibility and, through both the Training Packages and its Industry Advisory Committee, IBSA is pleased to support this government and industry initiative.

Workforce Development and Productivity Places Program workshops

The response to the half-day national IBSA workshops around the potential critical RTO role in the implementation of PPP Phase III held early in September was most pleasing. IBSA’s Business Development Manager, Matthew Trounce, assisted by Industry Managers, Susan McCarthy, Eddie Hardman, Rohit Gupta and other support staff, focused on providing RTO business development staff with a range of tools and approaches around key aspects of growing a training business. While the specific PPP information remains unclear, it was not possible to tailor the presentations to a single PPP focus, nevertheless, Matthew engaged his audience in methods for making the most of sales opportunities with a lively and interactive approach to increasing trainee numbers in addition to fee for service opportunities. Feedback to the workshops was most positive and IBSA looks forward to offering similar opportunities to stakeholders as the opportunities arise. For more details of the PPP as they become available, keep your eyes on IBSA’s page at www.ibsa.org.au/content/latestnews/PPP.html.

IBSA-Skills Australia National Industry Advisory Body Network Forum

At the end of August 2008, Skills Australia and IBSA met in Adelaide with state industry stakeholders to promote the role of Industry Skills Councils as a central, national industry voice in the allocation of the Australian Government commitment to 630,000 Productivity Places Program (PPP). The forum highlighted the importance to Skills Australia of IBSA and the other ISCs, as well as the state and territory ITABS, in the national industry advice process, providing an excellent opportunity for high level engagement between IBSA, Skills Australia and the ITABS.

The forum focused on identifying areas of immediate skills gaps as well as identifying the future areas of skills needs for the workforce planning process, skill needs that IBSA’s initial environmental scan identified and which will be an important element in the 2009 Escan. In looking at key issues affecting government and industry and the implications for the Australian workforce, the forum discussed major trends in the supply and demand sides of labour and capital markets, and the factors affecting training responses to support existing and new entrants to the labour market. The forum provided a welcome opportunity for IBSA to work with state and territory advisory bodies on building our national industry advice network.

Country-wide IBSA-State and Territory Authorities forums

Meeting the existing and emerging skills needs of IBSA’s six industry sectors through continuous improvement of the Training Packages is one of IBSA’s key activities. Our 11 Training Packages are at various stages of maturity, usage, review, development and re-development, due in part to the rationalisation of work by predecessor ITABs, more recent Board funding allocation decisions, short term funding agreements and the passage of time.

To assist IBSA to fulfil its requirement for continuous improvement, in September we initiated workshops with each State and Territory Authority around the country with the aim of gaining a shared understanding of the work ahead, and for IBSA to provide the State and Territory Authorities with an overview of our Continuous Improvement Plan. IBSA’s Industry Managers and Project Officers have consulted with the State and Territory Authorities as to the extent of their involvement in the development process of each project and to further discuss ways to ensure State and Territory Authorities are updated throughout the stages of the development and validation process. This has been a very productive dialogue with stakeholders who are critical to the successful implementation of our continuous improvement process and we are very pleased with the discussions, feedback and progress.

Expressions of Interest: BSB07 Overview Workshop in Sydney

ICT02 Cover ImageAlthough the first round of BSB07 workshops are now complete, IBSA is accepting expressions of interest for further overview workshops to be held in Sydney.

Attendance at the overview workshop will facilitate the VETAB rollover process for RTOs with superseded BSB01 qualifications on scope to the revised BSB07 qualifications mapped as having equivalent outcomes.
