New qualifications in Dance

The stage is set for a new era in accredited training for young people wanting to pursue careers as dancers. From 2012, private dance schools and TAFE colleges will be able to offer nationally endorsed qualifications in dance and tailor their teaching to any style of dance – from hip hop to classical ballet and anything in between.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) developed the new qualifications in consultation with industry and dance teaching institutions around the country. IBSA is one of a number of Industry Skills Councils recognised and funded by the Australian Government to develop nationally endorsed training products. The qualifications cover dance teaching and management as well as dance performance, and are part of the Live Performance Training Package.

The national dance qualifications will be officially launched on 11 November at Brent Street performing arts studios in Sydney. Brent Street is one of a number of Registered Training Organisations around Australia that already offer State accredited courses in dance and performing arts. These organisations are expected to adopt the national qualifications over the next 12-18 months.

A highlight of the launch will be performances by students and teachers from several dance schools showcasing Australian indigenous dance, ballet, tap, ballroom, musical theatre and Middle Eastern dance.

Coinciding with the launch are free industry information sessions for people from the dance industry who would like to know how the introduction of national dance qualifications affects them and how they can benefit from the initiative. IBSA will also be running professional development workshops for dance teaching institutions and studios interested in making the transition from State accredited courses to the new national qualifications. Sessions are scheduled in major cities around the country and through online webinars and teleconferences.
