Dr. John Mitchell - Biography
Dr John Mitchell BA Hons, Dip Ed, M Ed Admin, MBA, EdD, is Managing Director of John Mitchell & Associates, a research and consultancy company he established in 1992 to assist organisations in the education, health and public service sectors improve their impacts.
John is a prominent evaluator, analyst and strategist who specialises in workforce development and strategic and change management in vocational education and training (VET). Please see www.jma.com.au.
He is also Managing Director of JMA Analytics, a company he founded in 2010 and which specialises in capability measurement using quantitative techniques. The range of capability analysis tools (CAT) includes VETCAT®, for measuring facilitation and assessment capabilities of VET practitioners, CURCAT®, for measuring the industry currency of VET practitioners, LEADCAT®, for measuring leadership attributes and skills, and ADMINCAT®, for measuring the capability of staff in administration. MANAGECAT™, for measuring the capabilities of managers in any sector, will be released in late 2011. As of September 2011, 22 TAFE institutes have used one or more CATs.

John is a prolific author in VET. Some of his research reports published in early 2011 include:
- Creating and Adding Value - a set of ten case studies of TAFE NSW personnel demonstrating best practice in adding value for clients.
- Improving workforce capabilities - a set of ten case studies on how South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE builds clients’ workforces.
- It’s not about age - the final report of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) project on mature age and existing worker apprentices.
- The Benefits of Measuring Non-completions Accurately, a report for Service Skills Australia.
John was also lead researcher for the 2010 national Skills Survey for the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), released in early 2011.
