IBSA strategic direction 2008-2010
We have already seen significant progress on the
Government’s ‘Skilling Australia for the Future’ policy initiative. The initiative has major impact on the role of IBSA and our work with you.
What is unique about IBSA is its whole-of-system impact, by virtue of its extensive industry coverage, the major contribution of its industries to the nation’s prosperity, and the responsibility carried by the first word in its title: innovation. IBSA industries contribute about one-quarter of Australia’s GDP to the Australian economy and require specific technical and occupational skills for their effective operation.
IBSA's occupational groups include a high proportion of knowledge workers such as managers, administrators, professionals and associate professionals. Knowledge work within industries and organisations as well as innovation and creativity are increasingly being seen as the critical ingredients of economic success.
These developments create significant challenges for IBSA: to deepen its understanding of its industries, to look beyond existing structures to new forms of training products, and to ensure that everything it does reflects the needs of its industries for innovation.
During 2008-2010, IBSA will advance the skill development within the workforces of its industries, by:
- giving voice to industry,
- developing fresh products and services,
- providing advice to enterprises and RTOs on skill
needs and solutions
- engaging in innovation and new thinking,
and achieving its goals through connections and collaborations with all its
stakeholders.
The following diagram illustrates IBSA’s strategic focus and stakeholder engagement. While many of the stakeholders have been identified, please contact IBSA if you or your organisation have inadvertently been overlooked. Your feedback is vital to ensure we fulfil our obligations to the sector. (click to enlarge)

In summary, the IBSA strategy sets out the following directions for the organisation:
- IBSA will help to shape national systems to support
IBSA’s industries, and show how vocational education and training can deliver
what its industries need.
- IBSA is determined to work the principles of
innovation into everything the ISC does and to build acceptance and
recognition by industry that IBSA has a role to play in bringing about
cultural change in enterprises and providers.
- IBSA will continue to provide leadership by
developing fresh training products and services to support the development of
the skills needed for a flexible, innovative and adaptable workforce.
- IBSA will also become actively involved in assisting enterprises to solve business/workplace problems through the establishment of training needs analyses and brokerage services. IBSA will allocate resources to engage with enterprises to define their business problems and, where relevant, identify appropriate training based solutions to address those problems.
In realising its strategy and supporting the Australian Government’s ‘Skilling Australia for the Future’ policy initiative, we look to our broad range of stakeholders to continue to provide the collaboration and information vital to taking us forward. We will keep you informed of developments and updates as they happen and always welcome your input and feedback.
