Australia’s 10 Industry Skills Councils
(ISCs) and TAFE Directors Australia (TDA) have established a shared
position on a number of fundamental issues critical to the skilling of
Australia’s workforce.
TDA and the ISCs met recently in Hobart to explore issues facing the
publicly funded training system, which would benefit from a common
position and collective commitment to their resolution. In a special
communiqué from the meeting; TAFE Institute CEOs and ISC chief
executives released a set of ‘shared
priorities’.
The purpose of the priorities is to guide vocational education
policy makers -- across national, state and territory jurisdictions. They
cover issues for the publicly-funded Vocational Education and
Training (VET) system to meet the participation and productivity goals of
the current Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agenda and to respond
to the specific needs of the current and future
workforce.
These include:
Establishment of a public funding model to enable
real workforce development Building
practitioner skills and professional development; and Removing
federal and state 'inconsistencies'.
Martin Riordan, CEO of TAFE Directors Australia, said,
“Securing a shared position on some of the most fundamental issues facing
our publicly-funded training sector is critical if it is going to meet the
needs of industry and its current and future
workforce.”
Arthur Blewitt, CEO of the Agri-Food Industry Skills Council
said, “The ISCs and TDA are both about ensuring our workforce is skilled
to world class standards. Although our roles are different the
issues identified impact on us equally. Thus it is timely to have some
frank discussion and get real movement on their
resolution”.
