Global summit on skills development, New Delhi
17-18 September 2008

India views itself as becoming the ‘skills capital of the world’. In the last year there has been an increased understanding of the importance of skills development as a vehicle for inclusive growth, and the government believes that Stakeholders' interest in skills development is on an all time high. Indian Industry is ready and keen to partner government in promoting quality in training. They believe that the International Community is looking at India as the next big destination in skills development.

In partnership with Australian Government - DEEWR, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will host the "Global Summit on Skills Development 2008: Building People – Building India – Building Skills" in New Delhi, 17–18 September 2008.

Participants are invited from national and international representatives of industry, policy makers and VET training providers. The summit aims to:

  • share approaches to, and good practice in, industry involvement in skills development
  • develop an understanding of skills development through public–private partnerships
  • undertake a sectoral needs analysis on skill gaps and opportunities in retail, automotive, construction, health and financial services industries.

Day 1 of the summit features three business knowledge sessions:

  • Global perspectives on skills – the industry – institute connection
  • Engaging stakeholders – delivering through public–private partnerships
  • Universalising skills – from policy to practice

Day 2 of the summit includes Sector Specific Roundtables in which white papers on action required to address the skills shortage in five chosen sectors will be developed.
