New Government and Departmental Arrangements

The new Rudd Labor Government was sworn in Monday December 3rd by the Governor General. We would like to provide you with advice as to the name of the new Portfolio and related arrangements.

The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) amalgamate to become the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, is Minister for Education, Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion. The Secretary of the new Department, DEEWR is Ms Lisa Paul, PSM.

The Portfolio will bring together the core elements of the Government’s productivity and participation agenda from early childhood, through schools, through trades training and the wider vocational education, through universities as well as the participation agenda itself. As well as preparing people for work and job placement, the Portfolio will cover participation in work and the laws governing the workplace. The new Administrative Arrangements Orders indicate that DEEWR will be responsible for education, employment, workplace relations, youth, early childhood and childcare.

Other members of the Government with responsibilities and with interests within the Portfolio include:

  • the Hon Brendan O’Connor MP (Minister for Employment Participation) and
  • the Hon Kate Ellis MP (Minister for Youth and Sport) on youth issues, as well as
  • Parliamentary Secretary, Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens, on Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, and
  • Parliamentary Secretary the Hon Maxine McKew MP on Early Childhood and Childcare issues in her capacity of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister on these matters.
