New Government and Departmental Arrangements
The new Rudd Labor Government was sworn in Monday
December 3rd by the Governor General. We would like to provide you with advice
as to the name of the new Portfolio and related arrangements.
The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and the Department
of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) amalgamate to become the Department
of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). The Deputy Prime
Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, is Minister for Education, Minister for
Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister for Social Inclusion. The
Secretary of the new Department, DEEWR is Ms Lisa Paul, PSM.
The Portfolio will bring together the core elements of the Government’s
productivity and participation agenda from early childhood, through schools,
through trades training and the wider vocational education, through universities
as well as the participation agenda itself. As well as preparing people for work
and job placement, the Portfolio will cover participation in work and the laws
governing the workplace. The new Administrative Arrangements Orders indicate
that DEEWR will be responsible for education, employment, workplace relations,
youth, early childhood and childcare.
Other members of the Government with responsibilities and with interests
within the Portfolio include:
- the Hon Brendan O’Connor MP (Minister for Employment
Participation) and
- the Hon Kate Ellis MP (Minister for Youth and Sport)
on youth issues, as well as
- Parliamentary Secretary, Senator the Hon Ursula
Stephens, on Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, and
- Parliamentary Secretary the Hon Maxine McKew MP on Early Childhood and
Childcare issues in her capacity of Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime
Minister on these matters.
What does this mean for IBSA?
DEST branding and our references to their funding will change to the
Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and IBSA will
progressively advise you of relevant information affecting our reporting and
advisory roles.
