Telecommunications Technician
If you enjoy technical
challenges and would like to apply your analytical skills within the
Telecommunications Industry, you should consider working as a
Telecommunications Technician.
Telecommunications Technicians can install and operate
telecommunications equipment, data cabling and cabling products on customer
premises in accordance with Australian Communications Authority
requirements. Telecommunications cabling work requires that you become a
registered cabler. The Telecommunications Technician's work is undertaken
both indoors and outdoors and involves contact with customers in homes and
offices. Typical duties include:
- Installation of telecommunications equipment and
services;
- Placement of cables on support structures and building faces
for both internal and external locations;
- Installation and maintenance of telephone systems and
telephone points;
- Testing of telephone equipment and telephone
systems;
- Placement and termination of cables;
- Maintaining documentation related to work carried
out;
- Safe use of general hand and power tools and general
equipment normally related to these tasks;
- Using interpersonal skills related to clients, employer,
supervisors, work associates, team members, other contractors; and
- Working in a team environment.
ICT20202 Certificate II in Telecommunications
The Certificate II in Telecommunications provides the knowledge
and skills needed for the installation of telecommunications equipment and data
cabling and cabling products on customer premises. The qualification includes
essential units on working in the Telecommunications Industry, while also
providing the opportunity to select units from other specialist areas to meet
the Australian Communications Authority requirements to work as a registered
cabler. The training program below is an outline of some of the competencies
that form part of the Certificate II qualification.
What you can expect in a training
program
Training can be undertaken at a TAFE where skills and knowledge
can be delivered in a simulated working environment. Some Registered
Training Organisations may provide a combination of training on the job as well
as classroom training off the job. A Certificate II in Telecommunications
training program that would provide for work as a Telecommunications Technician would include:
Occupational Health & Safety policy and
procedures
- Following workplace procedures for hazard identification and
risk control; and
- Contributing to the management of occupational health and
safety.
Installation of cable support
systems
- Meeting the cabling requirements for commercial buildings;
and
- Installing fixings and support.
Terminating metallic conductor
cable
- Identifying termination system;
- Setting up a suitable work area; and
- Preparing cable for termination and terminating
conductors.
Organising and monitoring cabling to ensure
compliance with regulatory and industry standards
- Organising work equipment and materials; and
- Monitor work activity to meet specifications.
