Telecommunications Engineer

The Telecommunications Engineer has a broad role that requires an in depth technical knowledge and extensive experience within the Telecommunications Industry.  This position is ideal if you want to work in an environment that will provide a high degree of autonomy and may include some responsibility for others.

Telecommunications Engineers are more likely to be working on systems and equipment that are new, complex and novel.  This specialist role is one that is used within the major Telecommunications Carriers, equipment designers and manufacturers and vendor companies within Australia.  Typical duties include:

  • Assessing installation requirements;
  • Designing systems;
  • Planning and performing installations;
  • Testing installed equipment;
  • Fault finding;
  • Some supervision of others;
  • Working as part of a team; and
  • Communicating effectively with customers.

ICT50202 Diploma of Telecommunications Engineering

The Diploma of Telecommunications Engineering covers employment roles involving design, installation and management of telecommunications equipment and systems, and, data communications systems.

The qualification builds on skills and knowledge completed in the Certificate IV in Engineering or equivalent skills and knowledge gained in the Telecommunications Industry.

The training program below is an outline of some of the competencies that form part of the Diploma qualification.

What you can expect in a training program

Training is usually undertaken at a TAFE or Registered Training Organisation where skills and knowledge can be delivered in a simulated working environment.  A Diploma in Telecommunications Engineering training program that would provide for work as a Telecommunications Engineer could include:

Development and delivery of technical information to company staff

  • Develop product information and technical data;
  • Develop technical specification manuals; and
  • Develop training manuals and user guides.

Designing a telecommunications project

  • Consider design options;
  • Gather field information;
  • Analyse area and select design option; and
  • Prepare design plan.

Commissioning telecommunications network equipment

  • Plan commissioning procedures;
  • Installing software and connecting transmission bearers; and
  • Testing hardware and equipment.

Integrating new systems and equipment into the telecommunications network

  • Organise any planned outages;
  • Provide alternative transmission paths; and
  • Implement and test integration of system.
